I'll have to pick up this mystery. I've had family near there all my life so it's one place, outside of where I've lived, that I have spent the most time and know well.
For instance, the cover sure looks like an illustration of the famous lone pine in Pebble Beach - not Carmel. Picky, picky, I know. It is iconic and it's not like there aren't similar trees all over the area.
I'm looking forward to reading it.

After all these years my blood pressure still rises at the thought of all the praise lavished on Snow Falling on Cedars, so I guess I fall into the "when it's wrong it ruins it" group. Tom Robbins gets it right (natch), which does enhance the enjoyment.
I didn't like *Snow Falling on Cedars* either, but not because I was familiar with anything about the plot or characters or setting. I can't remember exactly why I didn't like, I just remember I never wanted to read another book by the author.
